The IBIA Planning Committee members invite you to join them at this 1st biennial meet-and-greet networking event on Wednesday, March 13, 2019 at 7:30pm. The reception has been organized to promote interactions among young investigators and the IBIA leadership and contributing members to encourage building a network of career-long contacts. 

This is a limited attendance event and a ticket is required. You can sign up during your registration process.

UNMASKING BRAIN INJURY RECEPTION

On Friday evening, join us for a glass of wine and hors d’oeuvres in the Sheraton and Osgoode Hall of Sheraton Centre Hotel to view handmade masks from the Unmasking Brain Injury Project and watch various film presentations by conference attendees.

The mission of Unmasking Brain Injury is to promote awareness of the prevalence of brain injury; to give survivors a voice and the means to educate others of what it’s like to live with a brain injury; to show others that persons living with a disability due to their brain injury are like anyone else, deserving of dignity, respect, compassion and the opportunity to prove their value as citizens in their respective communities.

The masks on display at the reception are masks decorated by brain injury survivors from Ontario.

HOLLAND BLOORVIEW TOUR

Join the team from Holland Bloorview for a tour of their Brain Injury Program Rehabilitation facility. Drs. Peter Rumney and fellow staff will lead the tour. Participants will have the opportunity to tour the facility, learn of the history of the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Team and ask questions about the program design and organization. For more information about Holland Bloorview, click here. Transportation is being provided by Gluckstein & Associates.

This tour is free to attend but registration is required as space is very limited and will be assigned on a first-come, first-served basis.

TORONTO REHAB KITE TOUR

Tour one of the world’s most advanced rehabilitation research and development centre – KITE at Toronto Rehab – a place where new treatments and technologies have been developed for people recovering from and living with disabling injury or illness. You will have opportunities to visit the Challenging Environment Assessment Laboratory, the only facility of its kind in the world. This massive underground lab features the world’s first hydraulic motion simulator. This simulator can be integrated with four customizable testing environments that enable researchers to recreate and evaluate conditions such as ice and snow, different terrains and slopes, and driving conditions involving rain and headlight glare. The tour also includes laboratories that simulate both healthcare (e.g., a patient’s room) and home environments. Together, these world-class facilities allow researchers to safely and accurately measure the difficulties encountered in the real world. For more information please click here

MOVIE NIGHT

On Friday during the afternoon break, there will be a showing of the movie, “Overcoming”, by Katerina Dejkoska.  The documentary “Overcoming” exposes how individuals cope with the consequences of Traumatic Brain Injury that are different in any one of them.  Besides the documentary there are 32 short videos about TBI. Canadians love hockey! This documentary focuses on the neuropsychiatric and social  impacts brain injuries can have on an aspiring professional hockey player, Max Taylor. A supporting cast of scientists, psychiatrists sports journalists and recognizable hockey greats helps audience grasp the impact brain injury can have on a persons  life. The film was purchased by the CBC documentary channel and is also a part of the National Film Boards library.
