Objectives:

  • Describe the critical steps to developing evidence-based guidelines for clinical practice.
  • Outline updated recommendations for diagnostic assessment, outcome prediction, natural history of recovery, treatment and family counseling concerning persons with disorders of consciousness (DoC).
  • Identify remaining knowledge gaps and directions for future research in DoC.

Description:

In this symposium, the lead authors of the joint American Academy of Neurology, American Congress of Rehabilitation Medicine and the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living and Rehabilitation Research Disorders of Consciousness Practice Guideline will review current guidance on clinical management of persons with DoC, outline the framework used by the guideline development panel to systematically analyze the evidence extracted from the world literature, present the updated practice recommendations and discuss their implications for clinical practice. Participants will learn state of the art strategies for diagnostic assessment, outcome prediction, treatment and counseling families.
